Pythies, the all-women, witchy grunge sensation from Paris, are making waves in the global music scene. Founded by bassist and vocalist Lise L. in late 2022, the band pays homage to 90s grunge icons like L7, 7 Year Bitch, Babes in Toyland, and Hole, while weaving in elements of witchcraft, sensuality, and feminist defiance.
The formation of Pythies began in January 2023, when Lise L. connected with drummer Anna B. Void and guitarist Thérèse La Garce through social media. Thérèse was later replaced by Alice Adjutor in June 2024, solidifying the band’s current lineup. Together, these women embody a gritty yet empowering sound that blends punk, grunge, and mystical energy.
In May 2023, Pythies released their debut EP, Always Too Much, which introduced the band to the French underground music scene. Following this, they toured extensively across France. Their third single, “Eclipse,” dropped in March 2024 and quickly amassed over 20,000 views on YouTube, earning a spot on KEXP’s playlist. In April 2024, Pythies collaborated with The Velvet Hands for a cover of the cult hit “Chick Habit.”
Pythies’ latest release, the single “Toy,” debuted on June 20, 2024, and will be part of their forthcoming EP. The band continues to confront societal expectations with their music, merging feminist themes with noisy, dissonant sounds influenced by Sonic Youth, Hole, and The Breeders. Their upcoming EP, which features five tracks, delves into the deceptions and challenges faced by young women as they navigate adulthood.
The lead track, "Blondinette," provocatively addresses stereotypes surrounding blonde women, reclaiming the “Barbie” and “bimbo” personas often dismissed as vapid. Through biting lyrics and infectious hooks, Pythies challenge listeners to confront these outdated clichés head-on.
As part of their mission to spread their unique blend of grunge and witchcraft across the globe, Pythies will embark on a highly anticipated French and US West Coast tour this fall to promote their upcoming EP.
